Prelude to a Birthday

Even though February is only 28 days, it felt like the longest month of the year. I've always dreaded February because it's historically the toughest month of winter and usually our peak for illnesses. This Feb has lived up to its reputation. We started the month with epic snowfall in the DC area. When they forecasted another 10 inches, I decided to hit the road and take the kids to Va Beach. I got us packed and out the door in two hours flat after making the decision. My parents were desperately trying to get home from San Juan and I picked them up at the Norfolk airport that evening. Meanwhile, both their cars were parked in DC. We stayed in VB for a couple days so they could unpack ride back with me to NoVa on Friday. The week was not boring. Both kids were over 10 days into a nasty cold. On Wed, I took Charlotte to an urgent care clinic. Three hours and one chest x-ray later, she was diagnosed with pre-pnuemonia. Poor girl. Her first time on full dose antibiotics ever. She takes daily low dose antibiotics for her kidney reflux. She was more sick than I've ever seen her. Her eyes looked pathetic from too much coughing and lack of sleep. On Friday, AJ seemed to be getting worse and now in addition to endless snot coming out of his nose, it was coming out of his eyes! I took him to our pediatrician the afternoon we got back. Poor guy had double ear infections - happy early birthday! I had no idea! I didn't even realize he had a mild fever because he's such an easy going guy. In the car ride back from Va Beach, he would occasionally cry out in pain. That's when we suspected something was wrong. They put him on a super dose of antibiotics and it knocked them out quickly, thank goodness. So both kids were on antiobiotics for the first time ever. Good times. Mommy was sleep deprived and exhausted. It was no surprise when I started coming down with a nasty cold the next day. It wiped me out for a full week.

I'm happy to report we're all healthy now and ready for spring! Melt snow melt!

AJ's first popsicle

Untitled from nuggetsmom on Vimeo.

It's not really popsicle season yet but we had a bunch of uneaten honeydew in the fridge. We blended it up with yogurt and made some popsicles. AJ loved it! These will be even better during his next round of teething. I love all his babble.

Snowmageddon video

Filmed from our front door on Saturday morning. The kids were having a blast and AJ and Bryn were watching from the warm indoors.

Snowtacular! Blizzard 2010

Dave building a snow fort for the kids. They all loved it!

While the big kids were outside playing, AJ and Bryn played nicely inside.

So much snow!

Kellen and Charlotte are standing on a big mound. We got about 27 inches total!

This is the main drag in our neighborhood.

Front of our house.

Our street.

The magnolia at the entrance of our neighborhood isn't looking too good.

This guy thought it was funny that he gave his car a mohawk.

All ready to play play play all day.
Update: We lost power at 10pm last night as I was trying to post these pictures. The power was back on by 4am so not bad at all. I don't think the snow is going anywhere soon because it's supposed to be in the teens all week. We're forecasted for more snow on Tuesday! Yowzers.

Butterflies

A couple weeks ago we visited the butterfly exhibit at Natural History with Emma, Erika and Mary Kate. It was FABULOUS! I highly recommend it. We got there first thing and had the whole place to ourselves. The curators were so friendly and informative. Here's one landing on Erika's shoulder.

They use paint brushes to pick up the butterflies so they don't damage any of their delicate body parts. Erika had her fancy camera with her so I'm sure she got some good shots. I was taking pictures on my small point and shoot with AJ in the Beco so they're not great.

We could watch a couple new butterflies emerging from their chrysalis. Amazing!

One landed on my ponytail and stayed there the entire time. They had to remove it before we left the exhibit. Maybe it liked the scent my two day unwashed hair?! Apparently it's pretty common for the butterflies to land on people. They like all the new colors and smells.

Charlotte and Emma were so well behaved. Charlotte loved it!

Not sure why they both have their hands in their mouths at the same time?
There were butterflies to discover everywhere we turned. Can you see the one in this picture?

These are the newest butterflies of the day. They keep them in this netted container until they are ready to fly.

Three and a half

A rare moment while AJ is napping and Charlotte and I are able to play a game together.

Charlotte celebrated her half birthday yesterday. She's officially three and a half. Such a sweet girl. It's amazing how much they change in 6 short months.

Snow appetizer

Charlotte and AJ are admiring the snow we got last weekend. It was an appetizer compared to the blizzard we witnessed the last 24 hours.
